It seems that some white folk are outraged that the recent home run derby winner doesn't speak English. Cuban born Yoenis Cespeedes, who made history for being the only home run derby winner who wasn't picked to play in the All Star Game, created an uproar racist tweets from white fans of the game when they realized Yoenis doesn't speak English. One truly offensive tweet stated that Yoenis should be paid in goats instead of American dollars.
White America, I know you think baseball is still your game, still" America's Pastime", but you need to look out on that field, you need to take a long hard look into those dugouts. There aren't many white ball players left. And while the ones that are still playing in the major leagues are fantastic ball players, they don't begin to scratch the surface of talent or athleticism that their teammates of color possess. You want an all lily white sport, go watch a hockey game. Oh wait, hockey isn't completely white anymore either. Well try golf then. Shit, my bad. Uhhh tennis perhaps? Just don't watch the ladies play and you'll be alright there.
My point is this, you white America, you need to get over this living in the past crap. I completely understand your wanting to hold on to the 1950's way of life, that time when everything was like Mad Men, where Blacks knew their place and Latinos were barely heard from. Yeah, those days are over and it's high time you realize this.
As for your precious American Pastime, since 1996 there have only been three, THREE white winners of the Home Run Derby. Juiced up Brady Anderson in 96, juiced up Jason Giambi in 02, and Justin Morneau in 08. All the other winners have either been Black or Latin, and so what one of them doesn't speak the language you want him to speak, who the fuck are you?

ReplyDeleteAmerica - especially the white side of the equation - has a bit of a chip on its shoulder. The arrogance of our national superiority is something the rest of the world rolls its collective eyes at. Yes, we may still have our missiles and might in the military arena, but we as a nation are falling down the rankings of so many critical yardsticks...education, healthcare, Why? Because the backwards, shoot-this-country-in-its-own-foot mentality of not funding our public school system, sports, music, science programs and of doing anything it can to amplify the have and the have not's economic divide. For SOME illogical reason, this great nation wants to increase barriers to success and only give a few the opportunity to succeed. Ahhhh...the fall is going to be so damn painful but so well deserved.
America - and again, in particular white America - pull your head out of your ass. Isolationism will only strangle our potential. Rampant racism in the supposed happy melting pot is an evil root that will destroy us from the inside out. A Cuban...winning the great Home Run Derby...my hat's off to you Yoenis Cespeedes! You are the epitome of the American Dream! You made his way through who knows how many hardships to achieve a great recognition.
Shouldn't THAT be the primary message heard in the media and in our homes??? How America embraces the best of the best no matter where they began or what color their skin or language they speak?
